Saving for Her Period Is Saving for Her Future

The Edge Credit Union joined talk2me Foundation's Cycle Care project to encourage girls to save for menstrual hygiene.

On 24th September 2026, about 300 school children gathered at Mahean Presbyterian Church in Accra for the Cycle Care project, organised by talk2me Foundation. The theme was "Building Healthy, Confident and Empowered Girls Through Comprehensive Menstrual Health Management."

The Edge Credit Union was invited to speak on an angle of menstrual health that people rarely talk about: money. Awo Sika Quarshie-Awusah, Branch Manager of The Edge Credit Union, reminded the girls that saving for their period is saving for their future.

Periods are natural and normal, she said, but staying clean and comfortable each month costs money. When nothing is set aside, some girls miss school, feel anxious, or turn to unsafe alternatives.

Her message was simple: plan for your period the way you plan for anything important. She encouraged the girls to:

•  Find out what they need each month and what it costs.

•  Save a little from their pocket money, often.

•  Set hygiene money aside first, before buying snacks.

•  Keep their savings in a safe place.

She also had a word for the boys: if you have a sister, support her when a financial need arises.

"When you save for your menstrual health, you protect your dignity, your health, and your education," she told them.

The session brought together two causes close to The Edge Credit Union's heart, financial literacy and menstrual health, which support the Sustainable Development Goals. A saving habit built early gives girls confidence and independence, and helps keep them in the classroom.

Girls, parents and guardians who would like to learn how to start a savings account are welcome to visit The Edge Credit Union.

The Edge Credit Union thanks talk2me Foundation for the opportunity, and for its work in helping girls understand and manage their menstrual health with confidence.
